Hideko was AMAZING!!!! We loved her and our day with her was perfect! She blew us away right from the start when she met us at our hotel lobby and had prepared notecards for me to have during my stay in Japan that explained (in Japanese) my seafood allergy. This was so thoughtful and incredibly helpful as I navigated food markets and restaurants. Hideko also did research on ramen places that didn't use seafood, as I really wanted to enjoy that food while in Japan. She took us to the Meiji Shrine and Sensoji Temple, which she was incredibly knowledgeable about. We enjoyed hearing her talk about the significance of every detail of those historic spots. Hideko also knew lots of hidden gems that she took us to that we never would have found on our own such as a lookout spot that gave a great view of the city and a gourmet food market where we purchased tons of great treats. Hideko was a pleasure to spend the day with and we plan to recommend TFG to everyone we know planning a trip to Tokyo!

I cannot recommend Tokyo Free Guide enough, and am so happy I found the website. The information was very clear each step of the way, and I felt lucky when I was assigned Hitomi for my specific date. Hitomi was honestly perfect for me, so friendly, approachable, and such fun! She prepared very well for our trips, providing detailed itineraries well ahead of my travels, yet maintaining flexibility for the weather and my energy levels. We were able to talk about a great host of topics, not limited to the spots we visited, but she also shared about her day-to-day life in Japan, her family, and culture and politics in a wider sense. For me, the TFG service is better than a professional guide, due to its flexibility with tailored itineraries and timings, and also the versatile conversations and sights we visited. I am so grateful for Hitomi's time and kindness, and the services of TFG that made us a match. Please keep up the hard work TFG team!

This is what I posted on Facebook about my experience with Mayumi. It was fantastic!
I've been finding ways to have a more local experience vs. sightseeing...
Tokyo Free Guide is a non profit of volunteers who want to help overseas visitors experience Japanese culture and customs. My guide, Mayumi, took me around Tokyo for 7.5 hours yesterday. We rode the trains, walked almost 8 miles, ate lunch at a hole-in-the-wall okonomiyaki restaurant, and learned a lot about each other. She is probably ten years older than I am, and dreams of becoming an official guide for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. So she’s flying to The Philippines later this month for an intensive 2-week English course. Guiding lets her practice her English, and she has made friends from all over the world. And yes, it was all free!
A highlight of the day was running an errand with her in Shibuya to pick up a photo of her 3-year-old granddaughter. She explained that in Japan, they celebrate children’s “coming of age” days. Her granddaughter was photographed in a gorgeous kimono. This photo is of a 100-day celebration for babies, their first “eating ceremony”. I thought it was adorable that the baby isn’t old enough to eat any of the food in front of him and he looks so happy!

A wonderful tour of Tokyo
I am so happy with my guided tour of Tokyo with my amazing guide Shinya Iino. Right from the start Shinya-san wrote to me and proposed a wonderful full day tour based on my interests. He was extremely well prepared, and arrived with a full load of tourist pamphlets and booklets for my stay in Tokyo, very considerate of him. We visited temples and shrines, the Imperial palace, had a wonderful lunch on Tokyo Ramen street and later Japanese tea and sweets and finished our day on a wonderful water taxi. Perfect! Thank you so much Shinya-san for all your diligent work to prepare for our tour. I will certainly recommend Tokyo free guides to all my friends. Fantastic service.
