I highly recommend trying a Tokyo free guide when visiting Japan. Getting to go around with someone with a knowledgeable local is very useful and insightful. Being able to ask questions about different things I noticed when visiting the sites was very interesting. One of most the unique experiences I had was finding a random restaurant for dinner that specializes in cuisine from a northern prefecture (I think it was Akita?). No one spoke English there so my tour guide, Fumihiro, took care of everything and it was a very good and enjoyable meal.
